Event Schedule

9:30am – Registration Opens

10:00 am – 12:00pm / Morning Session – Eye Examination of the Dog and Cat
This session is limited to 20 veterinarians and the cost for IVMA members is $199 earlybird rate / after August 10, $249.

This lecture and hands-on lab will review the complete ophthalmic examination for dogs and cats. Participants will practice using direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy to evaluate the anterior and posterior segments of the eye.

The session will focus on proper equipment use, exam technique, and building confidence when performing an ophthalmic exam. Live volunteer dogs will be available for supervised hands-on practice.

1:00 – 5:00pm / Afternoon Session – Ophthalmic Surgery Lecture and Lab
This session is limited to 14 veterinarians and the cost for IVMA members is $449 earlybird rate / after August 10, $499.

This session begins with a lecture reviewing each procedure that will be demonstrated during the hands-on surgical lab.

Topics include:

Burr keratectomy and grid keratotomy for indolent ulcers
Hotz-Celsus surgery for entropion
Morgan pocket technique for prolapsed third eyelid gland
Third eyelid flaps
Temporary tarsorrhaphy for proptosis
Subconjunctival enucleation for glaucoma and ruptured globes

Cadaver dogs and all necessary equipment will be provided for the hands-on portion of the lab.

About the Speaker

Dr. Heidi Klein joined IndyVet in August of 2013. She graduated from Indiana University in 2001 with a B.S. in Biology and then from North Carolina State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 2006.

As an Indianapolis native, she found herself close to home after graduation and completed a rotating internship, three-year residency and Master’s Program at Purdue University in 2010. In 2011, she became board-certified in ophthalmology, and currently has professional affiliations with the American Veterinary Medical Association, American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists, Indiana Veterinary Medical Association, and the Central Indiana Veterinary Medical Association.

Dr. Klein is a certified Cat Friendly Veterinarian by the American Association of Feline Practitioners and helps oversee IndyVet’s Cat Friendly Practice status. She is also a Fear Free® Certified Professional.

She enjoys both the medical and surgical aspects of ophthalmology, with particular interest in feline ophthalmology, cataract surgery, and corneal surgery.

Dr. Klein treats all of her patients with the same care and compassion as she would her own pets. She spends her time away from work with her husband, two children and four cats. She enjoys hiking, baking, and working on her 1910 house’s restoration.

If provided by the speaker, CE proceedings will be either handed out during the session or emailed prior to you before the event.
