- Play dress up! If your dog has a short coat or seems bothered by cold, consider a sweater or dog coat. Bonus they look fashionable.
- Care for their paws. Just like humans, your pets skin and paws may be dry during the winter months. Always try to wipe their paws dry and maybe consider booties for your dog’s feet; make sure they fit!
- Make sure that your outdoor pets have insulated shelter and unfrozen drinking water. In extreme cold, even outdoor pets should stay inside.
- Know your pet’s tolerance for the cold; for example a husky may enjoy playing in the snow, while a short haired dog might not.
- Walks are still a great form of exercise for both you and your pet, but shorten walks during the winter and in very cold weather.
- Contact your veterinarian if your pet is shivering orextremely lethargic after being out in the cold.
AVOID INJURY/POISONING:
- Outdoor cats may seek the warmth from under your car or in the hood, so always check under your car, and bang the hood, honk the horn before starting the engine.
- Use pet-safe de-icing products and clean up any antifreeze spills quickly.
- Keep away from frozen ponds, lakes and streams.
- Only take your pet in the car when absolutely necessary and never leave your pet unattended in a vehicle.
- Check your dog’s paws frequently for signs of irritation or injury, especially after being outside in snow and ice.
- Wipe down or wash your pet’s feet, legs and belly to remove packed snow, ice, salt and de-icing chemicals after walks.
Winter months can be difficult for all of us! Being aware of the potential dangers for your pet during extreme weather is beneficial to all. So enjoy those winter months indoors cuddling with your furry friends.
