The health of animals, people, and the environment are closely connected. This concept—known as the One Health approach—recognizes that the well-being of each is dependent on the others.
Veterinarians play a critical role in this connection every day. Their work extends beyond caring for pets to protecting public health, supporting food safety, and helping maintain a healthy environment.
One of the most important ways veterinarians contribute to public health is through the prevention and control of zoonotic diseases—illnesses that can be shared between animals and people. These include diseases such as rabies, Lyme disease, and certain strains of influenza. By monitoring animal health, identifying risks early, and educating the public, veterinarians help reduce the spread of these diseases and protect communities.
In Indiana, veterinarians work closely with the Indiana State Board of Animal Health to monitor animal health, respond to disease concerns, and provide guidance during potential outbreaks. This partnership helps ensure a coordinated response that protects both animal and human populations.
At the national level, the American Veterinary Medical Association provides research, resources, and leadership to support veterinarians in advancing public health and environmental stewardship. Together, these partnerships strengthen the One Health approach—connecting local, state, and national efforts.
Veterinarians also play an important role in environmental health. From monitoring wildlife diseases to supporting sustainable agricultural practices, their work helps maintain balance within ecosystems. Healthy environments support healthy animals, which in turn support healthy communities.
Looking ahead, education is a key part of sustaining this work. Inspiring the next generation to explore careers in veterinary medicine ensures that the One Health approach continues to grow and evolve.
IVMA supports this effort through its K–12 educational resources, which introduce students to veterinary careers and highlight the impact veterinarians have on the world around them.
