Responsibilities and Duties

Essential Job Functions

  • Examine animals pre-op to determine their ability to undergo surgery
  • Perform surgical sterilizations
  • Supervise post-op rechecks, and oversee order of medical treatments as necessary to ensure complete surgical recovery
  • Perform wellness services and provide recommendations for follow up and preventative care
  • Supervise cleaning program for preventative of infectious/zoonotic disease

Qualifications and Skills

Position Overview

The Humane Society of St. Joseph County (HSSJC) has a mission to instill reverence for all life and to enhance the human/animal bond through the compassionate care of animals and community education.  Our Shelter Veterinarian as part of our team will be responsible for ensuring the highest quality care for the animals. This is a full-time salaried position that may require evening, weekend, and holiday hours. Occasional travel may be required.  This position reports to the Executive Director, and works collaboratively with the HSSJC Board of Trustees, staff, and volunteers.

Job Responsibilities

  • Diagnose treat, triage, examine, and provide routine shelter medicine to shelter animals
  • Assist in the design and implementation of medical and general care protocols
  • Insure and oversee proper animal intake in accordance with shelter policy
  • Consult and advise on health and related aspects of care for shelter animals at HSSJC, including but not limited to, vaccinations, administration of medication, testing, medical evaluations, humane health care, euthanasia and disease prevention in the shelter
  • Perform surgical procedures on publically owned, and shelter animals, as needed (for example, spay/neuter, hernia repair, tumor removals and ocular procedures)
  • Lead daily medical rounds and organize treatment plans for shelter animals
  • Work with RVTs/ VAs to provide outstanding patient care to publicly owned and shelter animals
  • Provide training, oversight, mentoring and consultation for technical and support staff
  • Maintain pharmacy/inventory (including controlled substances, regular orders and inventory), maintain and reconcile controlled drug log in accordance of DEA guidelines.
  • Assure accuracy as it relates to drug logs, submit reports within due dates.
  • Other duties assigned by the Executive Director and/or the Board of Trustees


  • Doctoral Degree DVM
  • Indiana State license to practice Veterinary Medicine
  • Experience in high volume spay/neuter clinic and/or post graduate surgical training preferred
  • Two or more years experience practicing Veterinary Medicine in a veterinary clinic, hospital, and/or animal shelter or control facility
  • Candidate must promote and support the overall vision and strategic plan for the shelter
  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License and insurable driving record
  • DEA Certification and CSR- or ability to obtain
  • Experience with Shelter Medicine preferred
  • Experience in emergency medicine and veterinary forensics preferred
  • Demonstrate success in working with a diverse team
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing in a diverse range of audiences and settings
  • Ability to handle stressful and/or difficult situations as presented by visitors, staff and/or volunteers

Working Conditions

Work environment may have regular exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as zoonotic disease, parasites, dirt, dust, pollen, odors, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, pathogenic substances, animal attacks or animal bites. The noise level in the work environment can be very loud. Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds with reasonable accommodation.

Terms of Employment

The HSSJC Shelter Veterinarian will be expected to work approximately eight (8) hours per day, 261 days per year. This position is considered to be an exempt position under the terms of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and as such the employee filling this position is not entitled to compensatory time or other compensation for hours worked over and above the regular forty (40) hour work week. The salary for this position is established by the Executive Director and the Board of Trustees. The benefits for this position are set out in the staff handbook, and from time to time amended.


Performance of this job is evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board of Trustees’ policy on Evaluation. The Executive Director will conduct the evaluation of this position.
